Scams are a dime a dozen these days. We come across fraud every time we open our email or receive a phone call from an unfamiliar number. While most scams are blatant and easy to ignore, some are deceptively genius and even the most discerning of us can get caught. The most recent IRS phone scam falls into the latter category.
Screen Your Calls
Here at Mason & Associates, we recently received a voicemail from an IRS impersonator that said the following:
“This message is from the investigating department of the IRS. The reason we reach out to you is to let you know that the IRS has filed a lawsuit against your name for tax evasion. So before anything goes wrong, give us a call back as soon as possible at our callback number which is 202-241-1508. Thank you.”
When you first hear a message like that, you might panic, which could lead you to call the number listed to find out more information and resolve the so-called issue. But remember, the IRS will never contact you via phone or email or ask you to compromise your security in any way. The IRS outlines various ways you can determine the validity of these types of calls. For example, if the caller requires payment through a specific method, demands immediate payment, or asks for sensitive information such as your Social Security number, it is most likely fraudulent.
What To Do If You Come Across A Scam?
Tax season is still a few months away, but scammers are hard at work to get your information and possibly steal your identity. You work hard to earn your money and protect your privacy, and it is our goal to work with you to safeguard these critical aspects of your life. Take heed when dealing with emails or phone calls that have anything to do with your finances.
